Background of the study:
Traditional religious beliefs in Egor Local Government have a profound influence on community perceptions of mental health disorders. These beliefs often shape the understanding of mental illnesses as spiritual or supernatural phenomena, which in turn affects treatment-seeking behavior (Obi, 2023; Akinola, 2024). Religious leaders and faith-based institutions are frequently consulted for healing, sometimes leading to delays in accessing clinical mental health services. The interplay between spirituality and mental health creates a complex landscape where stigma and misconceptions prevail (Igbinedion, 2023). Current research indicates that such religious frameworks may both provide comfort and contribute to the marginalization of individuals with mental health issues (Okoro, 2025). Addressing these beliefs through culturally sensitive education and collaboration between traditional religious institutions and modern mental health professionals is essential for enhancing community well-being (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
In Egor, traditional religious beliefs significantly shape attitudes toward mental health disorders, often resulting in stigma and delayed treatment. This misalignment between cultural perceptions and modern mental health care leads to inadequate support for affected individuals, necessitating a critical examination of these influences (Akinola, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the influence of traditional religious beliefs on mental health perceptions.
  2. To assess the impact of these beliefs on treatment-seeking behavior.
  3. To develop strategies for integrating religious support with modern mental health services.

Research questions:

  1. How do traditional religious beliefs influence mental health attitudes?
  2. What is the impact of these beliefs on treatment delays?
  3. How can collaboration between religious and mental health practitioners be achieved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional religious beliefs significantly influence community attitudes toward mental health.
  2. These beliefs contribute to delays in seeking professional help.
  3. Integrative approaches will improve mental health treatment outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study underscores the importance of reconciling traditional religious beliefs with modern mental health practices, providing a framework for community-based interventions that reduce stigma and enhance treatment uptake (Igbinedion, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to exploring the influence of traditional religious beliefs on mental health attitudes in Egor Local Government. It does not extend to other localities or broader mental health issues.

Definitions of terms:

  • Traditional religious beliefs: Indigenous spiritual systems influencing daily life.
  • Mental health disorders: Clinically diagnosed psychological conditions.
  • Stigma: Social disapproval or discrimination against a particular group.
